The present sport fishing world record for king salmon was set on May 17, 1985 on the Kenai River and now stands at 97 lbs. 4 oz.; that giant salmon was not alone that day in the Kenai, because our Alaska salmon fishing guide service landed an 85 pound salmon that same morning. The McKenzie River is renowned for its world-class trout fishing. It is abundantly stocked with Rainbow Trout and gives you the opportunity to land a resident Redside Trout. All native trout must be released back to the McKenzie River to ensure a future for these magnificent fish. The trout season runs from the end of April until mid November. June through September is the peak season.

Fishing for me is not just a hobby… it is a way of life… an obsession. I have always been very passionate about every aspect of fishing. I have developed quite an extensive knowledge of both fresh and salt water fishing, and the gear and tackle associated with it. I was fortunate to have spent 7.5 years working in the fishing tackle industry while going through college. I have been fixing, repairing, rebuilding, maintaining, and troubleshooting all types of fishing reels for over 17 years.

The Fly Shop

Mike Michalak and his partner Brad Jackson opened The Fly Shop in 1978. After their modest start Brad left the business in 1987 to move into the world of stocks and bonds. With a little help from the bank and a lot of hard work, The Fly Shop is proudly celebrating its over 30 years of being in business. Over time, The Fly Shop has fortunately attracted the employment of some of the best talent in the West. Much of our success is due to these honest and loyal employees. Since the second year of the company’s existence, Mike Mercer has been the owner’s right hand man. Pat Pendergast, who has worked for The Fly Shop for more than 10 years, manages our travel department. Tim Fox oversees our inventory while Michael Carranci supervises our International School of Fly Fishing and Kids camp. We also have Duane Milleman who coordinates over 2,000 days of guided fishing each year.
